REFLECTIONS

Experience

Overall, I found this module to be one of the most rewarding design projects this semester. It allowed me to experience the complete publication design process, from planning the content and creating illustrations to developing layouts, producing motion graphics, and preparing the final printed book. Throughout the semester, I created sixteen illustrations using Able Illustrator and applied them consistently across the publication to establish a unified visual identity.

The lecturer's feedback played an important role throughout the project. Every revision helped me improve my layouts, typography, image placement, and overall visual consistency. Producing both black-and-white and colour mock-ups also gave me valuable experience in understanding how digital designs translate into printed publications. Creating a short promotional motion graphic using Adobe After Effects further expanded my understanding of how publication design can extend beyond print into digital media.

Observation

Throughout this module, I realised that publication design is much more than arranging text and images. Every design decision, including the grid system, typography, image scale, alignment, white space, and visual rhythm, contributes to the reader's experience. I also learned that consistency does not mean repetition. Instead, maintaining a coherent visual language while introducing variation creates a more engaging publication.

Another important observation was the difference between digital and printed outcomes. Colours, paper texture, and typography appeared differently after printing, making mock-ups an essential step before producing the final book. The motion graphics project also showed me that animation should complement the publication's visual identity rather than overpower its content.

Findings

This project strengthened my skills in publication design, editorial layout, typography, digital illustration, and motion graphics. More importantly, it taught me the value of planning before designing, accepting constructive feedback, and refining my work through multiple iterations. I also became more confident in creating a complete design system, where the illustrations, layouts, cover design, and promotional animation all shared the same visual language.

Overall, this module helped me understand publication design as a complete design process, from concept development and visual storytelling to production and presentation. The experience has prepared me to approach future editorial and branding projects with greater confidence and a more systematic design mindset.
