REFLECTION
Experience
I experienced a complete learning process in typography. Starting from basic observation and analysis of typefaces, moving to systematic typographic experiments, and finally applying typography to visual communication, these tasks helped me shift from simply “looking at type” to actively “designing with type.” Throughout the process, I learned about letter structure, spacing, leading, and hierarchy, and gradually understood the importance of typography in visual communication. Although each task required multiple revisions, I could clearly feel my improvement and growing confidence in typography.
Observations
I observed that typography is not only about visual aesthetics, but also about readability, logic, and consistency. In Task 1 and Task 2, I tended to focus too much on individual letterforms and overlooked the consistency of the overall system. However, in Task 3 and Task 4, when dealing with more content and complex information hierarchy, I realized that spacing, leading, and alignment have a direct impact on reading experience. I also noticed that even small adjustments, such as changes in weight or line spacing, can significantly affect the overall visual outcome.
Findings
My biggest takeaway was developing a systematic way of thinking about typography. Typography is not about designing isolated elements, but about building a cohesive system that requires continuous testing, comparison, and refinement. I learned to plan information hierarchy before designing, use grids to maintain consistency during the process, and evaluate readability from the viewer’s perspective after completion. These tasks not only improved my typographic skills but also helped me realize that typography is a fundamental yet crucial component of visual design, providing a strong foundation for my future projects.
