Process:

Storyboarding and Preparation
  • Draw storyboard sketches to clarify the animation content (such as character movements, scene changes)
  • Use AI or PS to convert the sketches into vector graphics, layer them and name them for subsequent animation production
Create composites and add elements
  • Newly create a composite (Ctrl+N), set resolution and duration
  • Import AI/PSD files (File > Import > Composite), maintain layer size
  • Keyframe animation creation
  • Select the layer, expand the "Transform" properties (position/resize/opacity)
  • Move the timeline markers, insert keyframes by pressing Alt+Shift+K
  • Adjust the anchor point position to make the animation more natural (such as for character limb movements, the anchor point needs to be slightly adjusted)
Add effects and optimize
  • Text animation can be achieved through the combination of "Position + Opacity + Character Spacing"
  • For puppet animation, use the "Puppet Tool" to bind pins, and combine with easing curves (F9) to achieve natural swinging
  • Background elements (such as clouds) use the "Wave Deformation" effect to simulate floating

ARTIST STATEMENT:

In this ocean-themed lock screen animation piece, I created a breathing virtual marine ecosystem, aiming to evoke profound thoughts about marine conservation. Through multi-layered dynamic parallax technology, I arranged the background ocean currents, the mid-ground coral reefs, and the foreground marine life in an immersive spatial hierarchy, simulating the fragility and grandeur of the real ocean. When users touch the screen, jellyfish emit bioluminescence and whales make ethereal cries. These interactions are not only a visual treat but also a metaphor for the symbiotic relationship between humans and nature - just as every touch we make can affect this virtual ocean, and even small actions in reality can change the fate of the real ocean. Inspired by the ecological crises such as global marine plastic pollution and coral bleaching, I incorporated environmental protection concepts into digital art, using the gentle power of animation to replace preaching. When users interact with this azure blue every day, I hope they will realize: The ocean is not an inexhaustible resource pool, but a life network that needs careful protection.

Practical

1. Write a biography about yourself

INTRO

                                                                      Tell us about yourself

My name is Zhang Qiyu. I come from Qingdao, China. It is a very beautiful coastal city. I grew up by the sea since childhood. I am currently studying in the major of Creative Media Design.

PARAGRAPH 1

                                                                      What is your passion?

Since I was a child, I have always enjoyed drawing or designing some clothing accessories for myself. I also have a passion for music, as well as certain movies or animations.

PARAGRAPH 2

What’s motivate you to achieve your dream?

It's my passion for creation and hunger for great stories that drive me to bring my imaginative world to life through animation and filmmaking.

SUMMARY

How do you want to visualize your dream into an artwork?

I will channel my dreams into artistic works just like this ocean-themed poster—using the language of animation to make whales breathe on screen, weaving environmental parables with jellyfish bioluminescence.

2. Write a statement about your work

INTRO

                                                                  Tell us about your work

My work was created based on a Huawei theme lock-screen competition. I used it to create my own favorite lock-screen animation, which reflects what I want to express and the ocean nature that I mentioned as my favorite.

PARAGRAPH 1

What is the concept behind it?

I bring the ocean to life on your lock screen through dynamic parallax and interactive design - whales glide as you tilt your phone, jellyfish glow when you touch the screen, transforming every unlock into an immersive underwater journey. This is my gentle way to awaken love for the oceans, just like how Miyazaki's animations first inspired me, using living art to quietly change perspectives.

PARAGRAPH 2

What is the message you want people to understand it?

I hope people realize that every small interaction we have with the ocean (just like tapping the screen to awaken the jellyfish) is part of a cross-species dialogue—when the blue world on your lock screen comes alive by your touch, the real ocean awaits your gentle care too.

SUMMARY

                                                               What is your motto/ quote?

Make every interaction a gentle revolution.

REFLECTIONS

This creation of the lock screen animation has enabled me to deeply appreciate the unique environmental education potential of digital media. When the user's finger triggered the luminescence of the jellyfish for the first time, I witnessed the cognitive revolution brought about by interaction design - protecting the ocean is no longer passive preaching, but an immersive experience that can be touched and played with. However, reflecting on the overly beautiful coral reefs in the animation, I realized the core contradiction faced by ecological art: how to showcase the beauty of the ocean without whitewashing the truth of its impending extinction? Perhaps next time, a "dual-mode interaction" should be designed - a light touch reveals the ideal ocean, while a long press reveals the polluted truth. Using the interaction logic itself to metaphorically represent the selectivity of environmental protection. The most precious aspect of this dynamic medium is that it makes each user a co-author of the story's outcome, and protecting the ocean has always been a collective creation.
